How to Choose The Best Eco-friendly Hiking Clothing for Summer (plus extras)

Hiking is certainly of the most rewarding activities, and therefore, hiking clothing contributes to the quality of the experience. Getting in close connection to nature and staying fit at the same time is a great benefit to both mind and soul. No matter where or for how long you hike, you should do it with respect to the surrounding environment. On the one hand, this means protecting the natural beauties and making sure they remain unspoiled and trash free after your hike. On the other hand, it involves choosing clothing and equipment that was made with ethical and sustainable values in mind in the first place.

Important features when choosing hiking clothing

Note that when choosing your eco-friendly hiking outfit for the summer, you should take into consideration some features, according to each piece of clothing. How you choose each essential piece of clothing will determine whether you’ll get a good or bad hiking experience. Keep an eye open for the following characteristics:

  • material’s breathability
  • material’s ability to dry quickly: it needs to wick away sweat to keep you comfortable
  • clothing versatility: if you don’t hike very often, it is ideal that your clothes to have multiple purposes (yoga, jogging or swimming)
  • weight: it should be lightweight, easy to carry
  • comfort: it should allow you to move easily
  • colors: lighter colors absorb less heat

  • materials sources: choose organic, recycled, upcycled fabrics

Here is a list of eco-friendly summer hiking clothing essentials for beginners and where to buy them:

Hiking Underwear

When you’re getting ready for a hike, you should better choose some quick-drying materials. These are usually made of synthetic materials, that also hold onto odors more than other options, like cotton. This starter pack from OrganicBasics contains a workout bra and a pair of hipster briefs, both made of recycled nylon and elastane. The material benefits from special treatment to stay fresh for a longer period. The seamless knitting in both pieces boosts comfort, while the wide straps and shaped cups of the bra contribute to better support.

With seamless knitting and comfortable cuts, this top got my eyes. Recycled nylon treated with a Polygienece treatment meant to keep it fresh longer, it’s a veritable sustainable option for a hiking top. Besides, it’s also well ventilated and stretchy, so what else can you wish for from a top while being active.

Summer Hiking Shorts

When the outdoor temperature is rising, a pair of hiking shorts are essential. Moreover, during a warm shower in the summer, you will be happy to wear shorts instead of pants as they will usually be protected by a rain jacket and won’t get dry. These shorts are made from recycled polyester. The light airy fabric allows for sweat to dry quickly. The curved hem detail on the side and the soft brushed waistband add more to the comfort you get wearing these. In addition, the shorts are compatible with swimming. Just find your water spot and jump in!

Movement Trousers

These soft and stretchy trousers, designed for climbing in the first place have big chances of becoming your favorite hiking pants. I would argue that these are multipurpose trousers because they are perfect for both indoor and outdoor climbing, summer hiking, or just a spring or an autumn walk around the park. They are designed with both sustainability and movement in mind. The durable brushed organic cotton, along with perfect thought about cuts, will give you the best comfort needed for your hike.

Hiking Socks

You better don’t underestimate the value of a great pair of hiking socks, as it is true that they are a bit pricey. They are meant to keep your feet dry and comfortable, for the entire hike, be it about hours or days. Note that a good pair of socks should take into account breathability, moisture, and odor control features. These mid-rise socks are made with recycled wool. Wool is known to be the most recommended material when it comes to hiking socks, due to the fact that it has the ability to regulate your body temperature. Moreover, it has micro bacterial features to naturally fight odors and this pair also gets a special treatment to stay fresh longer.

Eco-friendly Sun Protection

Make sure you will have a comfortable and safe hike by wearing proper sun protection hats. It’s mandatory to keep the sun away from your eyes and your neck, in order to avoid sunburns or to get a heat-stroke. Hemp, organic cotton, and recycled polyester work together to offer maximum sun protection features and ventilation to this one cute hat. It also has a water-repellant finish to keep the rain away.

Water Bottle for a Lifetime

Yes, this is not a piece of clothing, but it is a must needed item on any type of hiking. Your outfit will only be completed and complimented by the water bottle, as you will carry with you no matter what. Though a plastic bottle would be lighter and more convenient to carry in your backpack, the number of plastic bottles that are actually being recycled is not keeping pace with the production. Stainless steel is a material with minimum environmental impact and in addition it has good hygiene performances too. Stainless steel bottles are gaining terrain back in the industry, as the bottle for a lifetime. You only need to buy it once, and then you will spare the environment of your share of plastics going into the landfill for the rest of your life.

Sustainable Outdoor Gear

After checking this necessary eco-friendly hiking clothing list, here are some other sustainable outdoor gear essentials. If you need one of the following only depends on your hiking duration. If you plan a two-hour hike, your water bottle might be all that you need. But the longer your hike gets, the more necessities you’ll have to carry. It is essential that anything you carry with you to be efficient, light, and to produce a minimized amount of waste.

This is such an informative post. I have a bad habit of buying new items every time I go on a new hiking trip. Will take your advise and try to fix the broken items I have instead! 🙂

Ahh this is the perfect post! I need to look into new gear for the summer and I love these suggestions.

Comfy socks and good footwear are a must for me as otherwise, I get pain in the ball of my foot. I also need to invest in a good sunhat as its too easy to get sunstroke. Mich x

I love hiking and always buy decent socks when I go so I don’t end up with a thousand blisters! I can’t wait for lockdown to be over so I can start enjoying the outdoors more again 🙂
